The Chihuahua at a glance

Character and temperament
Small but mighty – this saying probably fits the Chihuahua best. Anyone who has ever gotten to know a dog of this breed knows that these little four-legged friends are anything but just lapdogs that need to be carried around all day. With their open nature they love to explore their surroundings on their own, are always up for fun and games, and bravely keep up even on longer walks. No question – every dog would of course love to be pampered all the time. The same goes for the Chihuahua.
The strength of this short-legged furry friend definitely lies in its long attention span – which is why it often serves as a little watchdog and frequently makes itself known with a loud voice – not least because the Chihuahua loves to draw attention to itself and always be present wherever it goes.
Training and care
As small as it is, the Chihuahua, precisely because of its short stature and its strong will needs consistent training. It tends to overestimate its own size, which is why early socialization with dogs of all sizes during the puppy stage is important. Its eager-to-learn, clever nature allows this little four-legged friend to quickly and happily pick up desired behaviors.
Because the Chihuahua, like most small dogs, needs a lot of attention (and will demand it!), it is not suitable for living with small children or for being left alone for several hours at a time. If circumstances leave no other option, the strong-willed Chihuahua should always have a retreat away from children, as it can quickly feel overwhelmed.
Depending on the type, coat care can also be time-consuming. While short-haired Chihuahuas only need normal, regular coat care, it is more elaborate for the long-haired variety.
