Character and temperament

Anyone who has ever studied the body language of a Border Collie will quickly notice the typical herding behavior: lowered head, piercing gaze, stealthy walk. However, their motivation to work is reflected not only in their body language but also in their temperament: They love to work and want to anticipate their owner's every wish.

A →clever dog like the Border Collie misses nothing, which is why they also learn quickly—unfortunately, sometimes the wrong things. Their motivation can sometimes overflow, which makes this breed seem hyperactive and therefore they sometimes need to be calmed down a bit.

Otherwise, Border Collies are friendly dogs who rarely tend toward aggression. Only when they are understimulated or even overstimulated can bad habits develop. They are very sensitive and strongly oriented toward their owner. When interacting with other dogs, they are social, but would probably prefer a fun activity with their humans.

Training and care

With such an intelligent breed as the Border Collie, →consistent and clear training is essential. Here, patience and empathy are required, because pressure or even loudness will get you nowhere with this breed.

Always alert and always ready for the next task, this intelligent breed is a reliable companion and working dog. Once you work together as a team, they become your best friend. They can also be trained as therapy dogs and help you in everyday life.

If you don't want to train the breed as a working dog, you should find another task, such as one of the many dog sports like agility, dog dancing, or treibball. In theory, this four-legged friend is up for any fun. But in addition to keeping them busy, rest (training) shouldn't be neglected either. Ideally, start this from →puppyhood. Many Border Collies find it hard to simply relax.

Is the Border Collie a family dog?

Border Collies, just like →Australian Shepherds, are often trained as therapy dogs. The reason is their child-friendly and empathetic nature. As a →family dog, however, the breed is only recommended if you have enough time for your four-legged friend. A few walks are rarely enough. Only a task like a shared hobby will keep this breed properly occupied.
