With the feeding of your puppy, you lay the foundation for a healthy, happy dog life. Puppies need more meals per day than adult dogs. But how often do you actually need to feed your puppy? Our Pets Deli veterinarian answers this question in this article.

With our →starter kit for your puppy, you are well-equipped for the arrival of your four-legged friend.

How many meals does my puppy need?

When your puppy moves in with you, it is weaned from its mother and its digestive system is adapted to solid food. It is important that your young furry friend gets →special puppy food. Junior food has a higher energy content and a mineral content tailored to the needs of puppies.

Your little whirlwind needs a lot of energy to grow and play. At the same time, the stomach is still very small and therefore needs more small meals per day.

Feeding your 2-month-old puppy

When your puppy moves in at 8 weeks, you should feed it 4 times a day.

Feeding your 3-6 month old puppy

When your puppy is three months old, you can slowly reduce the feedings to 3 times a day.

Feeding your 6-month-old puppy

Once your puppy is six months old, you can switch to feeding 2 times a day.

A twice daily feeding is also recommended for adult dogs. While you can also feed your furry friend just once a day, some, especially large breeds, tend to suffer from stomach overloads.

Can my puppy eat as much as it wants?

You've found the perfect →puppy food for your furry friend and the four meals are practically inhaled? As a puppy owner, you might quickly wonder if the little whirlwind can handle an extra portion of food. Even though it seems tempting, you should feed your puppy restrictively and stick to the recommended feeding guidelines.

Dogs with constant free access to food consume about 125-135% of the amount of food they need. This means that your puppy would eat significantly more than it should.

Puppies typically do not get too fat from excessive food intake, but grow too quickly. This can lead to joint deformities and other growth problems. Therefore, you should not offer your furry friend an all-you-can-eat buffet, but must strictly adhere to the recommended feeding guidelines.

Of course, a few →irresistible snacks should not be missing either. However, always keep in mind that treats have relatively high calories and therefore do not feed more than what is indicated in the feeding recommendation.
