Character and Nature
A Podenco is essentially a combination of hunting and sight hound. Spanish hunters take advantage of his [→intelligent](/magazin/hunde/hunderassen/top-10-intelligente-hunde-schlauste-hunderassen), watchful, and agile nature and like to let him work independently. With his attentive demeanor and extreme speed, nothing escapes this sprinter. He loves to be given a task and pursues it with passion and ambition.
At home, the four-legged friend is very relaxed and enjoys a break from external stimuli. He prefers a calm environment where he can truly unwind.
Depending on which Podenco breed it is, the character traits can vary and are expressed to different degrees.

Training and Care
Above all, running and hunting are traits that are deeply ingrained in the Podenco and must be properly challenged and encouraged. To give the reddish-brown four-legged friend a task, one cannot avoid it; otherwise, he may develop bad habits. Activities in nature such as agility or mantrailing exhaust both body and mind and bring him much joy.
Moreover, most Podencos are quite sensitive and react strongly to any stimuli. To prevent this from leading to chronic stress for the four-legged friends, a calm environment and especially quiet (training) are very important.
Podenco without Hunting Instinct
It is interesting to observe that there are fewer Podencos with a very strong hunting instinct in Germany than one might expect. This is partly because many of the four-legged friends come from the →animal protection across borders. These are usually animals that have been "sorted out" or given up by hunters, who are not good enough for hunting or have completed their service.
Consequently, all Podencos with "less" hunting instinct end up here with us. Nevertheless, his love for wildlife should not be underestimated.
