Character and Nature

Wrinkled face, sweet skin rolls, small ears - the Shar Pei stands out with its distinctive appearance. Its wrinkled face invites cuddling, although the reserved four-legged friend might prefer to skip that. While it is very fond of its owners, it approaches strangers with a certain skepticism.

In general, the Shar Pei is considered a confident and strong dog that wants to prove itself in the open area. Here, early socialization and good training are important so that the character-strong four-legged friend learns to interact calmly and balanced with its furry friends.

The otherwise very calm dog is very people-oriented and does not like to be alone. Although it gets along well with children, it is not a playmate, but rather a quiet observer. Once it has built trust, it becomes the best friend and stands by you through thick and thin.

Training and Care

The confident Shar Pei is not suitable for inexperienced hands. Here, consistency and the right sensitivity in training are required. Those who enjoy working with their dog and are not necessarily looking for the "jack of all trades" among dogs will find much joy in a Shar Pei.

Dog sports, cycling, or jogging are not for this calm companion. A relaxed everyday life without much hustle and bustle is what it enjoys. Children should therefore be a bit older. However, this does not mean that it prefers to be alone and have its peace - far from it! A Shar Pei must be a firm part of the family and be right in the middle of things.

Due to the many skin rolls of the Shar Pei, above-average →coat care and skin cleaning are very important. The skin folds are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi.
