The Yorkshire Terrier - short legs, big needs

The dog in the handbag and the bow prettily draped on its head - this image is what most people probably envision when they think of a Yorkshire Terrier. Here, the reputation of the energetic four-legged friend precedes it, as this little terrier is anything but a lap dog.

Belonging to the terrier group, it lives up to its name, as it requires an experienced hand on the leash when it comes to training, care, and keeping. What to expect if you want to enrich your family with a Yorkshire Terrier can be found here.

Origin: Great Britain

Size: 22-24 cm

Weight: 2.4-3.1 kg

Life Expectancy: 13-16 years

Character: brave, affectionate, spirited, strong-willed

Character and Nature

Like all terrier breeds, the Yorkshire is naturally strong-willed, fearless, and self-confident. Due to its hunting instinct and abundance of energy, it needs a lot of exercise, always a new adventure, and plenty of mental stimulation.

Small but mighty: Not least, Yorkshire Terriers are known for their impressive, loud voice, which can be heard from afar. Cheeky and spirited, it does not shy away from large dogs, especially when it comes to protecting its home and family.

But the soft side can also be seen: Once the heart of a Yorkie is won over, it proves to be cuddly and affectionate with its owners. Towards strangers, it remains skeptical at first, which is related to its protective nature.

Training and Care

The smaller and cuter the dog, the more is generally allowed. The Yorkshire Terrier, with its small size, large button eyes, and soft fur, runs the risk of being labeled as "easy to handle" and not consistently trained. Training should begin with the Yorkie's arrival in its new home.

Early socialization with dogs of various sizes is also essential for the terrier to learn to better assess its size and to get used to a calm interaction with peers. From the start, it needs a lot of exercise and clear boundaries for its behavior. Interesting activities will tire out the little four-legged friend so that it shows a balanced nature and becomes a loyal, relaxed companion by your side.

Keeping it in an apartment is possible, provided there are opportunities for exertion in everyday life.
