Can cats eat eggs?

In principle, eggs are not considered →toxic foods for your cat and, when fed properly, can also be a healthy snack or a varied addition to their food. Especially the yolk contains valuable proteins and minerals for your feline friend.

However, keep in mind that a →healthy and high-quality cat food already contains all the necessary nutrients in balanced proportions. If you want to feed your cat fresh ingredients, our BARF fresh menus might be just the thing for you and your kitty.

Feed your cat raw or cooked eggs?

Letting your →cat lick a raw egg is supposedly good for a shiny coat. In reality, however, there are a few things you need to consider when feeding raw eggs:

Feeding raw eggs:

  • The egg must be very fresh.

  • Feed only the yolk.

But why only the yolk, when the egg white is low in fat and full of protein? Well, for one thing, the yolk contains all the important vitamins, proteins, and minerals of an egg—not the egg white. For another, raw egg white contains the protein avidin, which can inhibit the absorption of biotin and thus disrupt normal fat metabolism in your cat. Too much raw egg white can also lead to digestive problems.

So you see: If you give your cat an egg, better cooked! But even then, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Feeding cooked eggs:

  • The egg white should be fully cooked through before serving.

  • The egg should always be served unseasoned.

  • The egg must be completely cooled down.

  • Peel the egg and cut it into small pieces before feeding.

Don't feed too many eggs!

As with everything, the same goes for feeding eggs: in moderation, not in excess. Even if your cat goes crazy for eggs and you’d love to spoil her with them all the time, it should remain a very special treat for exceptional occasions. As a rule of thumb, you can stick to a maximum of one chicken egg per week. On the other days, you can spoil your kitty with other tasty and healthy snacks.
