The Ragdoll cat is the epitome of a calm, easygoing cat breed. She loves spending time at home and is ideal for families.

What makes a calm cat breed?

You bring home a cat breed that's known for its →calm and affectionate nature and think your feline will be easy-going from the start? Not quite, because every cat—even within a breed—is completely unique in character. Calm cat breeds simply have a certain predisposition not to be bouncing off the walls 24/7, like Savannahs, Bengals, or Siamese cats often do.

Calm cat breeds are generally more relaxed by nature and, depending on the cat, also more affectionate. They usually bond very closely with their primary person and →show their love, whenever they can—while other calm felines prefer to keep their distance, like the Russian Blue, for example. Serenity is their mantra and they can—contrary to the classic reputation of cats—easily tune out the hustle and bustle around them. Another typical trait is their barely existent urge for freedom, which is why calm cat breeds like British Shorthair, Persian cats, and Ragdoll are said to be very content living in an apartment.

→Cats and children? With calm cat breeds, you're bringing a patient four-legged buddy into your home. While it's always important to slowly introduce children to these sensitive animals and teach them how to interact properly, a content Persian cat will handle it much more calmly than a Siamese. That's simply their nature!

Calm cat breeds are often patient companions as well. When interacting with children and cats, it is important to highlight the animals' boundaries and needs.

Do calm cat breeds also need stimulation and activity?

It's the same for us humans: Being calm doesn't mean you have less of a sense of humor than extroverted people. The same goes for calm cat breeds: Especially felines like the Norwegian Forest Cat, Maine Coon, or Devon Rex are basically calm souls, but they also crave fun and playtime in their daily lives. So if you think a calm cat breed just sleeps all day and never lets their playful side show, you're mistaken.

Just like any other cat, these relaxed house cats need variety, stimulation and →consistent training. Whether you choose a →homemade wand toy with catnip or durable toys, that's up to you. What's important is that you make time in your daily routine to mentally and physically engage your cat.

Durable accessories for cats that can withstand any mood will save you money and nerves. When your cat is in the mood to play again and feeling playful strikes, our resilient accessories are there for you and guarantee loads of fun and games!

A calm cat rarely comes alone

...or at least not willingly. Cats are social animals, especially when kept indoors, and need a friend by their side who has four paws and speaks the same language. This way, you can be sure your feline is emotionally well cared for and can also stay alone from time to time. Everything is better—and more natural—with a friend by their side!

The exception are cats that have been raised alone from a young age or pets from shelters or second-hand. If you're adopting a young cat, it's best to pick a second one from the same litter or find another feline of a similar age. It is possible to →introduce a kitten to an adult cat, but it's not an easy task, and sometimes it just doesn't work out.

What should you consider when buying calm cat breeds?

As with any cat purchase, you should do thorough research on where you're getting your cat from. Unfortunately, especially with special cat breeds, there are untrustworthy "breeders" who are only in it for quick money and nothing else. Hereditary diseases and the welfare of the mother cats are ignored and it's not uncommon to end up bringing home a kitten with various health issues that aren't visible at first glance. Especially with flat-faced cats like Persians, breeders need to pay attention to many things to avoid torture breeding that results in cats who can't breathe properly and constantly have inflamed eyes. Always choose reputable breeders, take a good look at the environment and always ask to see the breeding certificates.

A calm temperament in cats is desirable for many people, but the health of your feline friends must take priority. Persian cats are often born with a flat nose, which can lead to breathing and eye issues.

They're all small and cute: Before you rush into getting a calm cat breed, keep in mind that cats like the Maine Coon and forest cats are beautiful, gentle animals, but as →large cat breeds they will reach a taller height than the average house cat or a Persian. Do you have the space and resources to meet the needs of a particular breed? Are you generally well →prepared for life with one or two cats of your own? This especially includes financial, time, and personal resources.

Especially when it comes to food, you should do your homework on what makes a healthy and species-appropriate diet for cats. The next cheap dish from the supermarket might taste good to your cat, but when it comes to ingredients it's anything but a healthy foundation. At Pets Deli, we always avoid sugar, grains, and artificial additives—lots of fresh meat, natural flavor, and high acceptance are our top priorities!

Our cat food: honest, healthy, delicious.

While love for cats is a great start, you should always plan such a decision carefully. With a calm cat breed by your side, you'll face a life full of tasks—but in return, you'll get a huge dose of love and tranquility for your life as a cat mom or cat dad.
