The Shih Tzu - small lion with a strong presence
Its small size does not prevent the Shih Tzu from drawing a lot of attention with its very present nature. This is largely due to its fine, long-haired appearance. What to expect when you want to expand your household with the Shih Tzu breed is explained here.
The Shih Tzu in Portrait
Origin: Tibet
Size: 20-28 cm
Weight: 4-7 kg
Life expectancy: 10-16 years
Character: lively, friendly, playful, confident
Character and Nature
Almost like a small lion, the Shih Tzu struts through the world - this furry four-legged friend was also called by the monks in the monastery who kept it as "Buddha's lion dog" as temple dogs in the 17th century. The long fur with its historical background still makes the Shih Tzu appear like a small lion today - also because it tends to switch from a calm demeanor to a more impulsive one at times.
Most of the time, however, the Shih Tzu is very affectionate, playful, and friendly. Despite its size, it has a stable self-confidence that leads it to be always open-minded towards both humans and dogs, and it does not shy away from larger four-legged friends.
Training and Care
The silky, smooth coat of the Shih Tzu requires →good grooming and demands a certain amount of time daily. If you do not want to present your Shih Tzu at exhibitions, a regular trim at the dog groomer is recommended to make maintenance easier.
Due to its willing and communicative nature, the Shih Tzu can be easily trained when approached with enough consistency. If rules are set and not followed, the clever little head will take its chance and become stubborn.
Despite its size, the Shih Tzu is a true nature boy and is ideal for keeping in the house and yard as well as in stables. If the surrounding area offers enough green space, the →small dog breed can also manage in city apartments. Due to its independence, the Shih Tzu can learn to stay alone for 4-6 hours a day, as long as this is not the case every day of the week and it receives enough stimulation.
