4 Romanian dog breeds

Four-legged friends from Romania are truly impressive animals. They all have a strong protective instinct and a robust physique. No wonder, since the Ciobănesc Românesc (translated as "Romanian Shepherd Dog") were once bred to protect against wild animals. Today, there are numerous mixed breeds of Romanian dogs, which often trace back to four specific breeds.

Ciobănesc Românesc Carpatin

Large, fluffy, but by no means a teddy bear – the "Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog" is a reliable guard dog for home and farm. However, strangers shouldn't be fooled by its pleasantly calm temperament alone. As a true guard dog, he is reluctant to share his property and protects his people with all his might. He is open and friendly towards his family, though not a lapdog.

Anyone interested in this Romanian dog breed should already have experience with demanding working dogs and live in a house with a garden or yard.

Ciobănesc Românesc Mioritic

Independent and self-confident – this Romanian dog breed also takes its job as a guard dog seriously. With its shaggy, long, white coat, it looks a bit like a little sheep, which is why Mioritic means lamb or young sheep.

Unlike the other Romanian dog breeds, this four-legged friend can also find a place in many families. Anyone who is familiar with spirited dog breeds knows how to properly train the Mioritic and can channel its protective instinct in the right direction.

The long coat of this four-legged friend requires regular grooming. Frequent brushing is a must to ensure its coat does not become matted. To protect your dog's skin and fur, you should use natural grooming products. Our Care Line offers you a vegan alternative – guaranteed cruelty-free, pleasantly scented and gentle on coat and paws.

Ciobănesc Românesc Corb

This breed from Romania gets its name from its jet-black coat, as Ciobănesc Românesc Corb means "Romanian Raven Shepherd Dog." But it's not just ravens that should be wary of this beautiful four-legged friend. This Romanian dog breed is also a guard dog that knows its job well.

With a height of up to 80 cm it is among the large dog breeds and visually resembles an oversized Border Collie. The breed is no less demanding and therefore belongs only in experienced hands.

Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina

As the name suggests, the Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina comes from the historic Bukovina region. Even today, it is a welcome livestock guardian and farm dog. With its brave nature it reliably keeps intruders off properties.

Although this Romanian four-legged friend looks like a cuddly bear, it is not a typical family dog. Its stubborn character and strong protective instinct need to be properly guided. This freedom-loving furry friend also needs a large garden or yard, where it can run and play.

Why are there so many stray dogs in Romania?

The number of purebred dogs in Romania is negligible compared to the number of stray dogs. The reason for so many strays is, as so often, uncontrolled breeding of animals. It is not uncommon for shepherd and livestock guardian dogs to be left to fend for themselves in winter. They roam the area and breed uncontrollably within the pack or with other stray dogs. But even privately owned dogs are often not neutered, as the financial means are lacking.

Many of these animals find a home through associations and animal welfare organizations. If you are interested in a dog from Romania, make sure to choose a trustworthy organization, so you don't unknowingly support illegal puppy trading. Be sure to inform yourself thoroughly before adoption about the temperament and health of your new companion.
