Cat allergy or cat HAIR allergy?
Those who react allergically to cats often assume they have a cat hair allergy. However, in the fewest cases do the affected individuals actually react to the hairs of the cats. Much more often, an allergic reaction is triggered by cat saliva, eye fluid, and skin flakes, usually by the allergen referred to as Fel d1. Hypoallergenic cat breeds produce much less of the Fel d1 allergen** than other cats, which is why they are considered suitable furry friends for allergy sufferers.
This allergen is found in saliva, sebaceous glands, and skin cells as well as in the animals' urine. Through licking, cats spread the allergen, among other things onto their fur. This is known to spread throughout the entire apartment and on clothing, which is why many mistakenly assume they have a cat hair allergy.
