Character and Nature

What the Kangal suggests through its large stature and strong build, it also reflects in its character: Confidence, strength, courage. A Kangal is an independent shepherd dog from paw to tail tip. Often left alone for weeks as a livestock guardian in Turkey, independence is simply in its blood.

However, the Kangal is by no means loud. On the contrary: As a calm observer with much insight, it first assesses the situation. Towards strangers, the four-legged friend behaves distantly and knows how to defend its herd or family if necessary. It would also prefer to do without other dogs and is considered not very socially compatible. Not without reason is the Kangal classified as a →list dog in some countries.

In the right hands, it can be a balanced, loyal, and sometimes even affectionate dog. As sweet as the →Kangal puppies are, it is not a →family dog as depicted in storybooks. The Kangal is and remains an independent, robust animal that has been used for decades to protect a herd.

Training and Care

A Kangal is not a classic pet. Those who are aware of the character and nature of the Anatolian shepherd dog, accept it, and know how to handle it will not be disappointed. A loyal working animal that stands faithfully by its owners - that is the Kangal. Those who manage to win the favor of the giant will experience a close bond.

In its nearly natural environment, the Kangal finds it easy to show its best side, which is why a species-appropriate environment for keeping it is essential. Then the sovereign four-legged friend shows itself to be caring, loyal, and even affectionate. Keeping a Kangal in a species-appropriate manner means having a large, fenced property with plenty of space to run and nature. Additionally, the owners should display a confident demeanor and be familiar with strong-willed dogs.

Is a Kangal Aggressive?

No dog behaves aggressively out of nowhere, and the Kangal is no exception. Unfortunately, it is increasingly being viewed negatively and labeled as "dangerous." What is the reason for this?

Often, "the poor animal" is brought from vacation in Turkey to Germany, where the owners then despair and are simply overwhelmed by the strong character of the dog. Additionally, it is especially important for this breed to pay attention to early socialization with other dogs and to guide the animal confidently. Especially in a densely populated country like Germany, Kangals can quickly develop undesirable behaviors due to lack of exercise, socialization, and improper care. However, they are not inherently evil by nature.
