The Lagotto Romagnolo - clever curly head

The Lagotto Romagnolo is often mistakenly thought to be a poodle or doodle due to its size and curly coat. In fact, this curly head is a popular →Italian dog breed that was once trained for water hunting and truffle searching.

Over time, its hunting instinct diminished, making it interesting for other dog lovers as well. Today, it is a popular companion and →family dog - maybe even for you?

Character and nature

The friendly face and open nature of the Lagotto Romagnolo are not deceiving: this is a open-minded, loving dog breed that is rather uncomplicated. Although the Italian water dog was once used for hunting, it today has, depending on breeding, only a moderately strong hunting instinct.

With its all-rounder character, the water dog is also an ideal →dog for families with children that joins in on any adventure. In fact, the breed is quite people-oriented and therefore also does not like to be alone. Those who do not just lounge on the sofa with the four-legged friend, but also take it out into nature, will have a balanced and relaxed four-legged companion by their side.

Training and care

Due to its open and friendly nature, the Lagotto Romagnolo is also a suitable four-legged friend for →beginners with dog knowledge. Of course, as with any dog breed, consistency, a confident demeanor, and the right motivation for cooperation are very important in training. Speaking of cooperation: generally, the breed loves to be with its caregivers and work. It also likes to show off a bit and tries to charm its owners.

The breed loves to be outdoors in nature with its loved ones, especially if it can also take a swim. However, many Lagottos find outings alone insufficient, as they also want to exercise their clever minds →to keep the clever four-legged friend busy. For a former scent dog, search games like mantrailing or dummy work are particularly suitable. But other sports like agility or flyball are also fun for them and strengthen the bond between you. Additionally, a →visit to dog school can be beneficial from puppy age to ensure the Lagotto has safe contact with other dogs, which it longs for.

Coat care for the Lagotto Romagnolo

The most distinctive feature of this breed is its dense curly coat. It has a woolly texture with tight ring-shaped curls, visible undercoat, and feels very soft. As is typical for a water dog, the top coat and especially the undercoat are waterproof.

The uniqueness is that the Lagotto Romagnolo is among the breeds that lose hardly any to no hair →hardly shedding breeds and tips. Unlike most dog breeds, it does not undergo a coat change twice a year; instead, the coat hairs keep growing. To avoid matting, it is very important to regularly trim the hair, gently remove small knots with a comb, and have the dog completely shaved at least once a year.

If you are now thinking: Great! A dog that sheds little means less mess and work, then you should not be deceived. Regular coat care →is really important, as otherwise, it can lead to painful matting or even hair mats that must be cut out. Also, →in winter, you should be careful that no large snow clumps form in the four-legged friend's coat.

The ears and eyes of Lagottos should be regularly freed from hair. Especially ear care is very important for the breed, as the densely furred floppy ears are an optimal breeding ground for bacteria. Gentle care products like our ear cleaner and sensitive shampoo are suitable to support coat and ear care.
