Can cats eat dog treats?

Do you like to pamper your furry friend with healthy snacks and do you also have a dog in your household? Then you are surely wondering if your cat can also have a dog treat - after all, both must consist of similar compositions, right?

The answer is: Not really, but your cat should ideally receive a treat tailored to its needs. It's not that simple, because unlike dogs, cats are pure carnivores, meaning they are meat eaters. Dogs, as carnivorous omnivores, can process certain components of food differently. Their stomachs have adapted to digest carbohydrates, while the digestive tract of cats is designed for meat as the main ingredient in their food. Therefore, unlike with dogs, it is also not a good idea to →feed your cat a vegetarian diet. A →species-appropriate and proper cat diet should always be based on scientific findings.

Conventional dog treats often consist of less meat and are sometimes enriched with grains. →A high grain content is also unhealthy for dogs, but it poses fewer problems for our furry friends than for cats. If you come across a snack with a high meat content without the addition of grains, sugar, and other unhealthy additives for cats, then a small snack now and then won't hurt.

Did you know that at Pets Deli, we focus on a high meat content for both cats and →dogs and avoid grains in any case? In our short and transparent ingredient list, you can see everything your pet consumes with our snacks - and it is not only particularly tasty but also healthy.

What is the difference between cat and dog treats?

As you have already learned, the difference between cat and dog treats lies in the ingredient list. Dogs can manage with a meat content of 50-60% or less, as for example, potatoes are a suitable ingredient. Besides carbohydrates and energy for an active day, dogs can also derive vitamins and minerals from this. In addition to meat, dog treats often contain vegetables, fruits, oils, and herbs - and that fits perfectly into their diet. Contrary to what →many feeding myths claim, dogs are not exclusively dependent on meat.

Which treats are the right ones for cats?

Species-appropriate cat treats are designed according to the needs of a cat's body. Due to their higher requirement for proteins compared to dogs, cat treats should largely consist of proteins that are digestible for cats. Given their natural conditions, cats derive proteins only from meat, so a high addition of vegetables and fruits would neither be species-appropriate nor digestible. The snacks also differ in terms of vitamins, as dogs' bodies can convert vitamin B into A, which is important for the health of their eyes. Cats are unable to perform this process, so their food and snacks must have vitamin A added directly.

The same applies to amino acids relevant for cats. Taurine is essential for cats and because it can only be produced in very small amounts by themselves, it must be obtained through food. In dogs, this acid is easily produced in sufficient quantities, so you won't find it in their diet.

With food, it's the same as with snacks. A meal that primarily consists of meat is a species-appropriate diet. In small amounts, fruits and vegetables can provide healthy vitamins, but cats derive their energy from meaty food. At Pets Deli, we also offer many →different textures for wet food. Picky? Can cats eat dog biscuits?

Dog biscuits are often a special case - because as the name suggests, the treats do not come in small bite-sized pieces, but rather as a biscuit. Aside from the too large chunks, biscuits are known to mostly consist of grains and anyone who has been paying attention can certainly say that dog biscuits do not represent a species-appropriate reward for cats. Even if dog biscuits are baked without grains and only take on the appearance of the biscuits we know, the answer remains the same.

If your cat snatches a dog treat and this only happens on rare occasions, it is not immediately harmful to health. However, there is a good reason for the strict separation of snacks, which should ideally be based on the very different requirements for the processing of ingredients.
