Chow Chow - cuddly lion dog with self-confidence

The wise face of the cuddly Chow Chow already reveals that this dog breed hides a very ancient lineage - and it even counts among the oldest dog breeds in the world. The history of the Chow Chow dates back to the 11th century, where the →Asian dog breed served in a similar form - but definitely with a blue tongue - as a pack and hunting dog. Its name translates to nothing other than "puffed-up lion dog" - the designation is visually therefore programmatic.

Character and Nature

From its comfortable gait, it can already be recognized that the Chow Chow is a particularly →calm dog breed. It has long tried with →calmness and finds it great to be alone sometimes. As much calm as this furry friend brings, it also carries a lot of stubbornness in its baggage. This →long-haired stubborn head only listens to its closest person, to whom it shows faithfulness and attachment.

Strangers are of little interest to the Chow Chow, and when new people enter its territory, its vigilant side often comes to the fore. The Chow Chow gladly forgoes entertainment and games - however, it does not say no to a comfortable spot on the sofa.

Training and Care

Its willful and vigilant nature definitely does not make the Chow Chow a dog for →beginners. This four-legged friend has potential and appreciates an experienced hand that can either offer it a role as a guard or hunting dog and addresses its nature, maintains a similarly relaxed lifestyle, and ideally lives in no large family. Because what the Chow Chow prefers to avoid is hustle and bustle, which is why it should not live in a household with (small) children.

When it comes to →training, it takes a skilled and patient human who knows the peculiarities of the →strong dog breeds. Through →early socialization with other dogs and people, the furry friend learns how to behave, which is particularly important for introverted dogs with a tendency towards pronounced vigilance.

The Chow Chow feels at home in the house and apartment. Once it has its retreat, it is satisfied, and if it were up to the furry friend, its day would consist of sleeping and quiet walks.

Chow Chows and Coat Care

A species-appropriate care also includes the taming and →care of the fluffy, dense coat. Especially the many skin folds provide the ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, which is why the coat must be free of knots and matting. Regularly check the folds for inflammation.

Is the Chow Chow dangerous?

The →medium-sized dog breed is often suspected of being an →aggressive furry friend due to its special character and its strong appearance. However, it is precisely its loyal nature that dog lovers appreciate about the Chow Chow. It is in no way a dangerous dog just because it cannot find anything appealing in hustle and children. The four-legged friend opens its heart to its favorite people, while it simply avoids everyone else.
